Back Bay Clean Up April 2016

Hey all, Luigi here. This week I want to talk about the Back Bay clean up this past weekend. For those of you who don't know, we go to Newport Back Bay at the beginning of every month to pick up the trash that accumulates in that area.

So the typical Back Bay Clean Up starts early in the morning, with the timing also affected by the tides. After the briefing we split off into two groups, with one group going on the kayaks and another walking along the shore. As usual, we were able to pick up several bagfuls of trash from the bay, and there were also the usual larger objects that have somehow found their way into the bay. This week for example, as you can see in the picture above, we found a chair and a trash can, and our members had to haul it all the way back to shore.

The event went pretty normally, with the exception of one of our members unfortunately falling off his kayak. Twice. Once was when we were about to come back and he somehow flipped over his kayak while reaching for something, and the second time was when were only about fifty feet from the shore. When I asked him how it happened again, he answered "That's what happens when you try paddling backwards."

Anyways, after gathering all the trash that we collected, we got to eat some hotdogs that the Rotarians made for us. One of the Rotarians made this really good chili that apparently won some awards. It's definitely something to look forward to at the end of these events.

Overall it was a pretty good event. We picked up a lot of trash, and we got to eat some good food. It was a good day.
